Smart metering: Urmet TLC's offer for distribution networks

Energy efficiency and consumption reduction are fundamental values for Urmet TLC. Our research has followed these principles in the design and construction of the components and technological infrastructures of the water, electricity and gas service distribution networks.

The smart metering system allows the installation of smart meters that communicate to users and service managers real-time information on consumption and network status. The advantages in terms of control and programming of consumption and efficient management of energy distribution are considerable.

Smart metering is in line with the European Plan called 20-20-20 which, among other things, commits member countries to increase energy savings by 20%. This saving can be achieved by increasing the thermal efficiency of buildings, but also by conscious consumption and advanced management of distribution networks that represent a historical criticality of services in Italy.

Smart metering is radically changing the way people relate to domestic users. A growing market that currently exceeds 980 million euros

The Urmet TLC offer for smart metering

Transmission / reception devices

All the devices needed to create a smart meter structure.

Concentrators or gateways that: receive the data transmitted by the first- or second-generation meters:

  • 169MHz / Lora concentrator
  • Antennas
  • Repeater 868 MHz / 169 MHz

Data management software

Front-end applications that collect and process Big Data from concentrators. They are returned in the form of useful information for commercial network management and diagnostics:

  • C.A.S. – Central Access System
  • NMS – Network Management System

Specialized consultancy

Technical team and proven mathematical models developed by Urmet TLC that develop and implement smart metering projects. Through thorough diagnostics of the network and the behaviour of the sensors in the area, efficient connections and reliable data are guaranteed:

  • Network Planning – Network planning service

Smart meter: what it is and how it works

Smart meters are second-generation meters that allow you to:

1

monitor consumption in real time

2

manage energy expenditure precisely and reliably with customizations and automatisms

Smart metering means a system based on a communication technology between peripheral meters and a centralized system of the service provider. The network is built on a 169 MHz / LoRa (Low Range) transmission between the data transmission units and the reception units.
But Urmet TLC is also able to integrate other types of existing transmission within the network or to make possible the communication of data through the Repeater 868 Mhz / 169 Mhz translator, able to make the counters of the first generation water.

Smart metering for energy efficiency: distribution network and consumption under control

The European Directive called “20/20/20” imposes on the member states a series of steps in terms of energy efficiency to be completed by 2020:

  • 20% less greenhouse gas emissions
  • 20% of energy produced from renewable sources
  • energy efficiency improved by 20%.

Smart metering meets the growing demand for optimization of energy resources. It is a real-time data, diagnostics and warning platform that allows companies to manage advanced distribution networks. For the user, the information represents the possibility of accessing controls and automation that improve and rationalize the use of energy.

The advantages of smart metering for utilities and consumers

The value of the smart metering market exceeds 980 million euros. And the regulations with legal obligations in this field continue to feed it.

Smart metering has advantages both for utility network operators and consumers:

1

reliability and accuracy of the measurement data

2

advanced and complete data management with the possibility of immediate statistics and reports

3

network control, leak detection and remote management

4

consumption control also in real time and bills based on actual consumption

5

lower risk of litigation for supplier companies.

Sensors, meters and reception systems: how to build an intelligent network for collecting energy consumption data

The smart metering system is part of the intelligent communication network called Internet of Thing (IoT) which integrates various services that simplify and improve the life of citizens and companies. Smart metering is only part of a complex system of sensors capable of communicating information on various useful services such as:

  • parking (smart parking)
  • public lighting (smart lighting)
  • heating buildings
  • garbage collection (waste)

All these services in fact take advantage of the 169 MHz / LoRa transmission technology, a standard that gives the possibility to create complex and complete networks also to multiservice providers.
